Commodore C64X Mister FPGA Build - The Best Retro Gaming Setup Ever
After years of sitting on the sidelines, I finally took the MiSTer FPGA plunge after a friend showed me his latest Commodore-wrapped creation using a brand new C64X case. The C64X can become a full-blown MiSTer in just a matter of minutes once you get all of the parts. You can get beige, a VIC-20 color scheme or even a black "TED" styled version. They are all Commodore branded with the C= key and badges and even come in a gorgeous professionally designed Commodore-branded box.
In this video I show you how to put one together, then show you some of my favorite games. And if you wait until the very end, I'll blow your mind with a Mister Add-On you'll want the second you see it in action. ARTICLE VERSION with Parts List: www.amigalove.com/viewtopic.php?t=2765

Is Apple Newton’s Handwriting Recognition Better Than the reMarkable?
Переглядів 9703 місяці тому
The Apple Newton was often mocked for its early handwriting recognition software in the 1990s. After only 5 years in the market, Apple decided to discontinue the device. How does the final version of Newton from 1997 stack up against the fantastic reMarkable 2 paper tablet in 2024? 8 bit (4 channel) or 14 bit (stereo)28khz per channel on OCS/ECS, 8 bit or 14 bit, 57khz on AGA. Closer to the technics VHS DAT machines of the era, rather than CD. In 1984(released 85). Check the TV segment with Fred playing synthesised guitar and strings back in 1985. Memory was at a premium back then, but you could play back raw HDD PCM audio recordings out of the box. To hear any "computer music" sounding so good was a real shock

    I’m glad you mentioned HyperCard. The well known “killer app” for the Mac back in those days was PageMaker paired with a LaserWriter. But for my money, HyperCard was the biggest reason for getting a Mac over other platforms. It was just amazing what you could do in a short space of time. I used HyperCard for my major project at High School where I imported the local bus and train timetables, and it became a public transport journey planner - working out departure and arrival times and where you had to switch modes of transport at junctions etc. All with a web like graphical user interface. My Dad later modified my stack so that it could export your trip information to the Newton to check on where you need to be at what time while on the go. It was amazing stuff! Despite all this, I find the Amiga fascinating today. It’s the only other computer, besides the Mac, with a cult like status. You don’t get such dedicated users like the Amiga had by accident. It clearly had that sprinkle of magic. So what a killer combination it would have been in the day to have combined these two computers in one! Unfortunately here in Australia, you really only see A500 and A600s for sale. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an A1000 (or any big box Amiga’s) in person. But then I look at my Commodore 128DCR and smile that I do have something special after all.

    The GEOS 2.0 disk is overloaded with printer drivers, including a MAC Laser Printer driver. The quality was excellent. The drivers adapted printers of higher resolutions, created stunning results. Also, many printers of the time had DIP switches allowing them to emulate other printer types. For example, Panasonic printers can emulate IBM Pro Printers. Under GEOS you could use all the drivers for all the modes your printer can emulate, allowing you to access what you considered to be higher quality. There was even a Postscript driver, allowing use of even more advanced printers and higher quality types. It was a wildly expanding time of development and excitement for the Commodore/GEOS legend.

      @@jm131719 Yes, I've gone down quite the rabbit hole around this topic. I have 4 ED disks a friend of mine gave me - never used. But of course we all wanted to figure out the HD conversion. The drive mechanisms the new drives use (Sony) are different than the ones they used back in the day (TEAC) and they have different sensors. After many experiments, we finally got a system down to where the conversions work 100% of the time now. Thank goodness, because HD disks are everywhere! Pretty cool.

    This seems to be a much better computer, hardware wise, than the Commander X16 which has absolutely no C64 compatibility and runs at only 8MHz compared to 40MHz here. Oddly, it seems like there's more software for the X16. It's a shame that one standard couldn't have been made. There's too few users as is. What drove software creation for the C64 in the 1980s was how many millions of users there were. You can't hope for that again, but I think there needs to be more than 1500 or so. There's an emulator for the X16. Is there one for the Mega65? Free users are still possible purveyors of software sales. No one but some hobbyists are going to bother for 1500 total users or whatever the exact number ends up being, many of which won't be interested in one particular software package.

      Same. You know, I think it's partly due to my affection for this setup and my friendship with Chris - I still use this setup as my A1K daily driver over my Parceiro, even though the Parceiro is about 100X better in terms of function and convenience. It's probably also partly why I have taken a slight hiatus from my daily Amiga obsessions and focused so hard on C64/128 these past two years. The Amiga setup in this video is one of my most prized pieces of vintage computer goodness. But it also makes me a little sad. Most of that has subsided but it's still there. I want to get back into it more regularly before the end of the year. The "Admittedly high price" is something I feel requires more attention than simply stating it, and saying there was a "Smear campaign" against it is implying a collective effort to actively join forces to say that no matter how great the thing is, we're going to make sure this fails. Even the most spectacular failures will sell more than 200,000 if there's that kind of attention being paid to it, in this case it's probably more that nobody cared. To me Apple is and always was a mid to upper mid-tear quality being sold as if it were high tier to a very rabid/cultish userbase that believes that are high tear. If you can't even sell to that group, then there's obviously something wrong with the product that somehow even made Apple's own users fail to see its benefits. Now that right there, is worth a video, no joke that the Simpsons make is going to influence a cult of people determined to buy a brand, something more made them not pay attention. What line is crossed that finally makes the diehards say "no way!", that's what I'd be interested in knowing. As for the Newton itself and what I think of it in regards to what this video shows, I have no personal experience with it, I'm sure I saw a couple back in the day, and I remember the X-Files game actually using it as one of the main mechanics of the game. I remember the jokes, I've made some of my own, but it's no surprise to me to learn that it's "not garbage", I don't expect anything from Apple to be pure garbage and of course this video shows that it's not that, but nor is it something that justified its price... Which is something I would say for every single Apple product ever released. Why this failed when most Apple products did not, that simply cannot be blamed on the people who never used the product, who just mocked it, no... It's on Apple users and the company somehow failing to convince them that they needed it. Apple did not/does not need volume of sales to succeed with a product, they only need their own users to buy whatever they make. The comparisons with the reMarkable I will assume are correct, as I certainly have no interest in that either, and hey, if the Newton is cheaper than that (now) and has better handwriting recognition, eat up that new old stock if it serves a purpose. To me, ahead of its time or not, it was another black and white device from Apple, only this one wasn't from 1984 when it had no business being made, it's from 1993, and it's not being sold for the same price that a GameBoy, that's for sure. This to me, as a video, a little too much. I don't think I could have gotten through it if it was anyone else, because it feels so much like all the other hardware stuff you see on here. The same type of shots, let's show a monitor with an old commercial, along with fake interference so it looks like what we "think" a VCR should look like, the same type of script which is obviously being read in this strange manipulative combination of monotone but also faux emotion (A UA-cam specialty), if the Newton was new I'd have to wonder if you were getting paid by Apple. -This is not meant to be taken angrily, it's more difficult than I can possible describe to write what I just wrote to someone I genuinely like and respect... What I do, will never be liked by most, but I will always have integrity, this type of video... Well, I'm actually surprised it didn't do better for you, because I feel this is the type of video that "should" get views on this site, the type of video that normally does I should say. I don't know, hopefully this only effects you if it's something you're wondering about yourself, because I'm going to tell you that there's nothing anybody could say about my videos at this point that I would give a ____ about. I hope you reach that point, I don't know what your goal is with the videos, and it's why I've never subscribed, I'm a very difficult person to get a sub from, and I can certainly say it was never earned by doing the same annoying pop ups of "subscribe" with a mouse pointer that then moves over to a bell with sound effects. If you're hoping to someday reach the likes of MVG/LGR, then disregard all of this, because you're doing it right. I'm only pondering this in a comment because there's nobody I'd like to subscribe to more than you... Buried underneath that script is passion for a device nobody else cares about, and I respect the ____ out of that, I really do.

      @@alpanchen Oh, now this is really cool to learn. I had no idea! Many of my favorite EF3 carts are SSI D&D adventures. What's cool about them is when you load them they ask which drive you want to save to. Since I have the IEC adapter, I should be able to set the external to 9 and save games to disk that way. I'll give that a shot later today. That would be cool!

    Nice build! I'm not convinced a MiSTer is compelling for me but I'd definitely consider this case as an option on my short list for a Denise mini-ITX Amiga. I feel pretty confident it would be a good fit with a picoATX power supply even allowing room for a CPU socket accelerator and a smaller (or maybe even two) zorro II card with an appropriate right angle riser.

    • @AmigaLove
      @AmigaLove Місяць тому

      If you decide to get a case, be sure to do a search on mini-itx.com for "barebones" and you'll see the 3 color options. The VIC-20 white case would look good with an Amiga core... hell, even the black one!

    • @JeremyLevi
      @JeremyLevi Місяць тому

      @@AmigaLove I was just looking at those and yeah, I agree the VIC-20 case feels the most Amiga. Ideal I think would be to have that paired with the white keyboard with grey function keys although I have no clue if they could accommodate that. Another option since it's standard MX mount keycaps would just be to swap the keycaps for something more appropriate.

    I've been waiting a lifetime now for a full fat 1:1 parity Amiga 1200 & C64 FPGA computer, that has a full mech KB, floppy drive and CD-ROM, plus native OPL3, SID and MIDI built in, along with a UHS-III full-size SD card reader, or something even better than that even like CFExpress, a traditional cart slot that can boot games, soundbanks/fonts and software, along with high-quality repro games inc modern indie releases and ports, basically the perfect C64 & Amiga computer FPGA all-in-one, would be amazing to get either X68K mode as well, or a standalone Sharp X6800 1:1 FPGA computer system with a replica of the OG case, keyboard and mouse, speakers and an OLED 4:3 monitor replica using an iPad 4:3 OLED panel, also with a proper Yamaha OPL3 ASIC and a nice Wolfson DAC, plus a collection or repro X68K game carts/box's/manuals, I hope someone does this one day, as the Amiga 1200 and Sharp X68K are the best way to enjoy retro computer games imo, but unobtainium for the most part (the Sharp X68K especially).

      @@f1lupo If I were based in the UK or EU I might have kept the Mega65. But it was so PAL-focused and fragmented about what the machine should actually *be* I honestly felt kind cast to the side from a user standpoint. And I feel like I kept wanting the machine to be something, or become something, that it wasn't. If you're a programmer and want to program on the machine you're the perfect target audience. If, like me, you're just a user... well, it's a bit more wild west. And there's a bit of a philosophical split between core Mega65 development and other cores, like the Commodore 64. Plus, I'm not a programmer. So, I solved my own issues and let someone else buy my machine (he was a programmer!). ;) It's a very cool machine and one of my good friends is now on the steering committee so I get monthly updates on the progress from the top. I definitely still "stay connected" to the scene. Some very smart people involved.
